What is C.L.A.S.S.?
|
| |
CLASS, an acronym for Connecting Learning Assures Successful Students, is a comprehensive curriculum model and philosophy founded by Barbara Pedersen. It provides a philosophy of teaching and learning, standard-based curriculum development, and research-based teaching strategies based upon the constructs of brain-based learning.
Brain-Based Learning
North Columbus Elementary School is the first C.L.A.S.S. school in the state of Georgia. Our faculty traveled to Indianapolis in the summer of 2006 before NCES opened. We were introduced to the C.L.A.S.S. model and participated in the Climate Strand. We are excited to head back to Indianapolis this July for more team-building and the Community Strand. We will finish our training in the summer of 2008 with the Curriculum Strand.

What Does C.L.A.S.S. Look Like at NCES?
|
C.L.A.S.S.
C.L.A.S.S. is a whole school model that allows students to build relationships, develop a common language, and nurture different learning styles. It provides a framework for children at NCES to become productive citizens and lifelong learners.
Every class at NCES will start the day with a 'Preparation Period'. This will include a 'Morning Message', an 'Agenda', and a 'Community Circle'.
|
'Community Circle'
A Community Circle can be done at any time of the day. The students sit or stand in a circle and they take turns sharing. It is a very risk free time and students can pass if they do not wish to share. A Community Circle can be used to work on a lifeskill, solve a problem or as a time to give input to an idea. The students learn to listen and respect the ideas of others.

'Morning Message'
This message invites students into the classroom, asks a thought provoking question, and provides a task to engage students as soon as they enter the room. In the lower grades, it is also used to build phonemic awareness, word strategies, and vocabulary.

|
'Agenda'
The agenda prepares the students for the day. It is a good 'hook and hold' strategy because it gives the students an opportunity to look forward to a particular activity. Some teachers use the agenda to reinforce a particular skill being taught in the classroom and some use it as an interactive lesson.

At NCES our goal is to "Do the Right Thing and Treat People Right".
Each morning we start the day with the "Life Goal Pledge"
"I will do the right thing today even if I don't feel like it. I will treat people right today even if I don't feel like it. Today, I will remember my will power is stronger than how I feel or what I think. All things are possible today. Good news is heading my way"
Throughout the year we will focus on these Lifeskills:
Friendship- to make and keep a friend Caring- to treat someone in a nice way Curiosity- to want to find out and learn new things Sense of Humor-to laugh and have fun without hurting others Pride- to feel good about doing your personal best Flexibility- to change plans without complaining Courage- to be brave Problem Solving- to find a way to take care of a problem Resourcefulness- to have good ideas for getting things done Cooperation- to work together Effort- to try your hardest Common Sense- to make good choices Initiative- to do something that needs to be done Organization- to plan and keep things ready to use Perseverance- to keep at it Patience- to be willing to wait as part of the process to resolve a particular situation Responsibility- to take care of yourself and be trusted to do what needs to be done Integrity- do what is right
Please reinforce these life skills at home and use the same language so our boys and girls become good citizens!!
