First Grade NCES 2008-2009

        Welcome back parents and children! We are so excited to welcome you to our beautiful school. We have been very busy getting the classroom set up and we are ready for a wonderful year. The first day of school will be so much fun because we will be able to continue where we left off in Kindergarten. We have a few new faces in our classroom and I'm sure everyone will feel like family very soon!

Curriculum

       Please visit my website and click on Parent Resources then Georgia DOE Standards. Follow the links to the First Grade standards. Our curriculum will follow the C.L.A.S.S. model and it will be embedded in various science and social studies themes. Yellow House will have a new theme this year! We will build our skills "Way Down Yonder On The Chattahoochee" with 'Camp Kindergarten' and 'First Grade Rolling on the River'. We will also be doing a lot of authentic reading and writing!

Homework

       We will have a regular weekly homework packet in First Grade. The homework will be in the STAR notebook on Monday. All homework and reading books are due back on Friday.

Book Orders

       We will participate in the Scholastic book orders several times this year. These flyers have very good (and cheap) books for independent and shared reading at home. Please send the order in an envelope with a check payable to North Columbus Elementary.

Discipline

       We use the STEP program. Each child starts the day on ‘green’. If he/she does not follow the classroom rules, he/she will be asked to move his/her name.

Green = “I had a great day”   Yellow = “I must try harder to follow the rules”

Red = “I missed a fun activity today” Blue = “I had a difficult day” (call/note home)

Library

       Every child will have a library account and will be able to check out books. I will let you know when our time is.

Parent / Teacher Communication

       Communication is very important! Please feel free to contact me through email or arrange a conference at school. The STAR notebooks should come to school everyday. We can exchange important notes by putting them inside the front cover. I am also working on my new website www.mrsmumpower.com so you can check out news and related information.
