Language Arts
My
reading and language arts program is based upon the Four Blocks model developed
by Patricia Cunningham, Dorothy Hall, and Cheryl Sigmon. I have adapted it to
meet the needs of my students and my style of classroom management. I have also
incorporated other literacy components to create a balanced literacy program. In
the following pages you will find information about Writing Workshop / 6 Traits
Writing, Reading Workshop, Guided Reading, Sustained Silent Reading, Word Study,
and Zoo-Phonics. The following books have helped me design my literacy program.
I have also added links on each of the pages that I have found helpful.

Sustained Silent Reading
Children read from teacher selected 'just right' leveled readers and from self-selected books during Sustained Silent Reading.

Word Study
Our K-1 Looping teachers
use Systematic Sequential Phonics (Making Words), Predictable Charts, and we
make Classbooks during Word Study.

Zoo-Phonics
Our children learn Zoo-Phonics in Pre-K and Kindergarten. It is a brain-based phonics program that helps children learn and use the letter sounds.

Math/Problem Solving
Our math
curriculum is project based and it is integrated with our Science and
Social Studies themes. We use Harcourt Math, literature based activities,
and Problem Solvers. We do lots of hands-on activities with manipulatives and
we teach a variety of
strategies to help solve problems.
